The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
by Douglas Adams
The funniest science fiction ever written. Don't panic.
My Take
Adams combines absurdist humor with genuine philosophical insight about the universe and humanity's place in it. The book that gave us 42, the Babel fish, and the phrase 'mostly harmless.' I re-read this every few years and it holds up — the jokes land differently as you age, but they still land.
Why It Matters
Most 'funny' sci-fi is either one or the other — Adams actually pulls off both. It's one of the few books that genuinely changed how I think while making me laugh out loud on the train.
Best For
Anyone who likes to laugh while thinking about big questions
